5 New Years Eve Party Ideas For Kids

Before becoming a parent, I remember how we use to plan going out for New Years Eve. It was a rush trying to find a place where a group of friends could all go and have fun, not pay hundreds of dollars and figure out transportation. Yes it was fun at the time, but now as a parent, I like that NYE is a little more low key. Maybe it’s dinner out with some friends, or maybe it’s a party at home with the kids.

Family Party

If you decide to throw a party that is kid-friendly, here are some fun ideas that everyone can enjoy.

1. Pizza and Movie Party
Almost everyone loves pizza’s and movies, so why not use that as a theme for your party. You can order pizza’s and pick a bunch of family movies and make a night of it. If you want to step up your game, you could even host a pizza making party. Have the crust, sauce and toppings ready. You can ask each family to bring one of their favorite toppings and then let everyone create an edible masterpiece that they can enjoy while watching their favourite movies.

If you’re looking for family friendly movies, Netflix has so many great choices right at your fingertips. They also have an original new series going that my kids loved and it’s perfect for NYE, All Hail King Julien. It’s five funny episodes with one of the favourite characters from Madagascar!

2. Craft party
If you’re the crafty type, then that can also be a fun theme for a New Years Eve party. Set up different stations with crafts for kids and some for the adults. Make sure the crafts for younger children are okay to do unsupervised. Everyone will have a blast and they will get to keep a memento of their night! 3. Pajama party
Who doesn’t love a pyjama party! Leave the heels and fancy clothes in the closet and get comfortable in a pair of cozy and warm pyjamas. They are perfect for any party and in case the kids fall asleep before midnight, they can be carried right to bed.

4. Games Party
For a family NYE party, board games are great because there are so many choices for every age. Set up an area for the kids to play board games they enjoy. Then have another area where adults can play cards or board games as well. You can never go wrong with a games night.

5. Early Countdown
If you have young children who won’t be able to stay up too late, try doing an early countdown. Have the New Year’s Eve hats, noise makers and balloons and start the countdown whenever you like.

Netflix even has a special All Hail King Julien Countdown that you can play whenever you think it’s almost bed time for the wee ones. It is four minutes long. The kids will have fun and feel like they celebrated something special and once you put them to bed, you can still stay up and enjoy the rest of the last night of the year.

Even though these are all great ideas for family New Year’s Eve parties, they are also fun for parties without kids. However you do end up spending your New Year’s Eve, I hope it’s wonderful and memorable!

  1. These ideas are great. This year we’re going to a quiz night at our church, but most years it’s been a night of watching movies as a family. It’s been a long time since I’ve had/been to a big party or been out for New Year’s Eve.

  2. I love the idea of a craft party! I will have all 4 of my kids home with me this year for new years, ranging in ages from 2 to 20 and I think this would be a great idea. Even my older ones will like helping the younger one. Could be a great family project.

  3. Early count down! That’s been us for the past few years and it’s great! The kids feel they are a part of something special and once they’re in bed, the hubs and I can cozy up on the couch with a movie! These are all great ideas – we’ll definitely try them out in the years to come!
Happy New Year to your family, Salma!
