Really Talking to Your Kids with Some Help from Netflix

Talking to Your Kids

My kids are young but I often think and (worry) about how things will be when they are teenagers. I remember being a teenager and the last thing I wanted to do was get into an in-depth conversation with my parents about my feelings!

Right now my kids and I talk about everything and they are always honest with me, as I am with them. I know that as they grow older, things will change but I want to still keep those lines of communication open. They should  know that they can always come to me, no matter what.

Talking to your kids with a little help from Netflix

I never really thought about how entertainment like a movie, an app or even or a good show could be a bonding point between parents and teens and even open the door to further nurture the parent child relationship.

This video got me little teary for a few reasons as kids and their parents bonded over entertainment.

Netflix can also help when it comes to talking to your kids about things that can sometimes be difficult like bullying, empathy, determination and honesty.

For the younger kids, here is a little cheat sheet as to which shows can really help you engage you little one in that conversation.

To actually be able to talk to your kids about a value that you think is important, make sure you actually sit down and watch the show with them. This way you are able to really have a discussion because you’ve seen it and it’s in a form that the kids like and can understand.

Have you been able to have a conversation in the past with your child about a core value from some sort of entertainment like a game, app, movie or show?

  1. I love your graphic for which shows to watch for little kids. I’m saving that to Pinterest! My son is just about to turn 1 year but it won’t be long before we’ll need this resource!

  2. Such a helpful parenting post. Often, parents can feel guilty letting their children sit in front of netflix but I feel that it can be a valuable experience. We recently watched Karate Kid and had a dialogue in bullying. Sure we all sat in front of the TV for 2 hours but watching it opened up a conversation that we probably wouldn’t have had until one of them was affected by it (in which case, a conversation that could potentially be more difficult for them to engage in).

  3. Great post – thank you for sharing. It’s so important to talk to your children about what they see on TV and online. I haven’t watched the 13 Reasons series yet but hear it’s eye opening
