New Year’s Resolutions

January first, a new year and hopefully a clean slate with a fresh start on those goals we’ve been struggling with. The things that slipped away from me in the latter part of last year were trying to lose the last ten pounds of baby weight, keeping track of what I eat and trying to be more patient.

I’ve heard from others and from my own past experiences that more often than not, new year’s resolutions don’t work and you forget about them after a few months. It’s also true that you shouldn’t need a new year to start new goals.

Despite all this, I’ve decided to make a few. However I’m going to change how I make resolutions this year. Instead of grand sweeping statements like, ‘I’m going to lose weight this year,” or “I’m going to be healthier this year,” or “I’m going to make a difference this year,” my research has found that making smaller, more specific goals gives you a higher chance at long term success.

So here they are:

-Exercising three times a week for 15-20 minutes
– cutting out soda/pop from my diet (for now, not forever)
-counting to ten (in my mind) before reacting to something I don’t like

Wow, I’ve written them down on my blog for the whole world to see! Maybe that’s the best way to keep resolutions, put them where everyone can see them, that way you have to follow through lol.

Jokes aside, what do you think about new year’s resolutions? A total waste of time? Or will you be making some this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Nice post, Salma. I think new year’s resolutions are a good start to the year so that we think positively of what lies ahead and believe in ourselves being able to reach them. Of course, we forget them by the 2nd week of January but hopefully 2 weeks of following them creates habits. Good luck on your’s!

    1. Hey Shelly, it definitely is good to start the new year on a positive note. And hopefully you’re right and the resolutions will create new habits. Happy New Year!

  2. From Facebook to Blogspot: what the comedian Red Green had to say about your question, Salma.

Well here we are in a brand new year with the same old us. Resolution time. I’m going to try to lose a few pounds. I know I’ll put it all back on but at least it’ll be new fat. My version of recycling. Have a great 2013. Just got a lucky sound to it, doncha think?
