Smiling Through the Rain

Even though I am a parent and I try to be good example for my kids, there are so many instances when I learn things from them. Today was one of those days.

Today was a perfect example. It was a field trip day for my 5-year old. They were going to the pumpkin patch. I had volunteered to drive and tag along for the field trip.

However, in the morning, since 7am, it had been raining, pouring rain. All I could think about was, oh my gosh, we have to go to the pumpkin patch in this cold and rain? Maybe it’ll get cancelled.

It didn’t get cancelled and we went. Yes it was cold, yes it was wet and yes it was muddy. But that didn’t dampen the spirits of any of the five-year olds in the class, including my daughter.

When we got there, I asked her how she felt about it and this is what she said:

After that, she had a happy smile on her face as we went to see the animals in the barn, on a hayride and a walk through the enchanted forest, all in pouring rain.

Eventually the weather  cleared up as we attempted to go through the corn maze (we did get lost a few times) and the most important thing, picking the perfect pumpkin.

As we walked back to the car and I was thinking of how I couldn’t wait to get into the car and warm up, Kyah was actually chatting about everything she’d enjoyed on the field trip. It made me think too. So what if it was a little wet and cold for a couple of hours? I got to spend a morning with my daughter, doing something that made her so happy  and creating a lovely new memory for us.

Often we get lost in the negative and miss the the rainbow. Luckily my daughter reminded me. And next week when I go to the pumpkin patch again, this time on my sons field trip, where it will most likely rain again, I know what I won’t be thinking about.

Sometimes we just have to learn from our kids and smile through the rain.

  1. Such a lovely post! I love the video….your face is all like “aaah rain” and she is just so jolly! As adults we become really great complainers. Great reminder from your lovely daughter!
