As the days get cooler, our family is very lucky because it is easy for us to stay warm. We can just turn up the heat, we can go out and buy ourselves a warm jacket, we can even make ourselves a cup of hot chocolate or a warm bowl of oatmeal.
If fact, growing up, I loved it when my mom had a warm bowl of oatmeal ready for me to eat on the breakfast table. My favorite thing to add to it was brown sugar.
I’ve continued the tradition with my kids and now they have favorite add-ins for their oatmeal as well. For my son it’s honey and berries. For my daughter it’s brown sugar and almonds. It’s a perfect way to start of the day before heading to school.
They don’t even need to think twice about grabbing their bags and warm coats as they head out the door. But that isn’t the case for everyone.
Some people don’t have that luxury, including the over 100,000 newcomers that come to Canada and who identify as in-need. Combine that with Canada’s cold winters and it can be a difficult situation.
Now there is something very simple that we can do to help out and make a difference. Quaker® is giving newcomers in need a warm welcome by providing them with new winter coats. Starting this month, October, when you buy a box of Quaker® instant oatmeal or Quaker Chewy® granola bars, they will donate $.05 towards the purchase of a warm coat to a newcomer in need.
Helping others in anyway we can is something that I believe is so important, especially teaching the kids about it from a young age. Even though our kids have everything they could every want, they often don’t realize just how lucky and blessed they are. So we do small things and hope that they learn and understand and continue to do so as they grow up.
We always try and donate gently used items to charities, the kids collect money for their birthdays instead of gifts and give half of it to a charity of their choice. We volunteer once a month to feed a meal to the hungry. And now with something simple like buying Quaker® instant oatmeal or Quaker Chewy® granola bars, you can help to buy a person in-need a new warm jacket to cope with a cold Canadian winter.
